after orderly wave cohorts

in motion. In

slow

motion on the field south a game

of softball ebbs

flows.

Lob. Thump. The ball hangs in the air

out of time no

end.

The fresh young men make tracks as

I do my own.

Take

easy breaths. Every one

of us has next

things

in mind our futures rehearsing

for the perfect

test

perhaps tomorrow. This day’s sun

breeze as before,

girls’

legs in vees spread on beach towels

flash of knee thigh

all

the pretty ones lollygagging

on the infield

but

others shy soft or simply lost

face away from

boys

running lines the old guy circling.
